During the summer semester of 2022 I completed my second honors experience through the English composition course, English 2089H. Every student at the University of Cincinnati is required to take this course; therefore, a wide range of majors were represented. This course being catered specifically to honors students allowed me to connect with students who held similar values as me. The objective of this course, in my eyes, was to hone in on research and storytelling skills within our writing. Though this was an online course, the discussion board posts, freewrites, and the peer review process allowed for genuine connection, creativity, and correction.
The course required students to take a deep dive into the world of a selected discourse community they were a part of. Naturally, I chose to explore one of the most pertinent communities in my life, the pre-professional ballet discourse. After analyzing the community as a whole, I completed a genre analysis honing in on how dancers are able to communicate through body language. This process allowed for a deeper appreciation of my craft, and the beauty of having a voice in the absence of words.
Attached to this post is my Literacy Narrative, and was the first major assignment for this course. This paper tells the story of how I became the reader and writer that I am today. The reflection and creativity involved in this assignment allowed me to notice nuances in my writing style. I am genuinely proud of my craft in this paper, and my professor is now using it as an example for future students. In addition, this assignment required a podcast where I delved into the power that reading gives us to build our empathy skills. I have also attached my final reflection paper I was required to write for this course. It is a more detailed look at how the course has altered my perspective. Ultimately, this course required introspection that provided clarity regarding the communities and values I surround myself with.
